Background of the Study
Secure communication is critical for military operations, where the confidentiality and integrity of strategic information can determine mission success. The Defence Headquarters in Abuja faces growing cyber threats that challenge classical communication security. Quantum secure communication systems—using quantum cryptography and QKD—can provide unparalleled protection by ensuring that any interception attempt is instantly detected (Ibrahim, 2024; Adekunle, 2023). This study examines the development of a quantum secure communication system tailored for military needs, focusing on establishing unbreakable channels for command and control, thereby enhancing operational security and safeguarding national defense strategies.
Statement of the Problem
Traditional military communication systems rely on encryption methods that may be compromised by advances in quantum computing (Emeka, 2023). The risk of interception and cyber espionage poses a serious threat to the integrity of military operations. The current infrastructure is not designed to resist quantum-enabled attacks, and integrating quantum security measures is challenged by high costs and technological complexities. This study investigates whether a quantum secure communication system can effectively mitigate these vulnerabilities and meet the demanding requirements of military operations.
Objectives of the Study
Develop a quantum secure communication model for military use.
Evaluate its performance in preventing interceptions.
Propose guidelines for system integration in defence operations.
Research Questions
How does quantum cryptography enhance military communications?
What are the integration challenges?
What framework supports robust quantum secure communication?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it aims to revolutionize military communications by deploying quantum secure systems. Enhanced security measures will protect sensitive operations from espionage, ensuring that defence communications remain confidential and reliable. The research will inform military technology strategies and contribute to national security enhancements (Chinwe, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, focusing on secure communication systems, defined objectives, and selected LGAs in the sampled state only.
Definitions of Terms
• Quantum Secure Communication: Systems that use quantum principles to ensure secure data transmission.
• Military Operations: Strategic activities conducted by armed forces.
